Pew: Most Tweeted Links to Popular Websites Posted by Bots

Some 66 percent of tweeted links to pop websites are posted by automated accounts, aka bots, instead of actual people, according to new information from the Pew Research Middle.

To analyze this phenomenon, Pew researchers put together a list of 2,315 of the nigh popular websites, so analyzed a random sample of 1.two million tweets from English language-linguistic communication users that included links to those sites during a six-week period from July 27 through Sept. 11, 2022.

"The results illustrate the pervasive office that automated accounts play in disseminating links to a wide range of prominent websites on Twitter," Pew researchers wrote in their analysis. "Among popular news and electric current result websites, 66 percentage of tweeted links are made by suspected bots – identical to the overall average."

Certain kinds of sites – including porn sites, sports sites, and news aggregation sites that compile stories from around the Web – got an fifty-fifty bigger share of their Twitter links from bots. An overwhelming 89 percentage of tweeted links to popular news aggregation sites were posted by automated accounts, Pew found.

The written report as well revealed that a "relatively small number of highly active bots" were responsible for a large portion of the links to prominent news and media sites on Twitter during the period. The 500 well-nigh-active bots churned out 22 per centum of those links. In comparison, the 500 most-active human Twitter users posted merely 6 percentage of the links to those news outlets.

"The study does not discover evidence that automated accounts currently have a liberal or conservative 'political bias' in their overall link-sharing beliefs," the researchers wrote. "Suspected bots share roughly 41 percent of links to political sites shared primarily by conservatives and 44 percentage of links to political sites shared primarily past liberals – a difference that is non statistically meaning."
